Coverage < Back to At A Glance
Travel insurance covers risks overseas while you are travelling, whether for work or for leisure. There are various types of plans around:
A : Plan Category: INDIVIDUAL or FAMILY
- Individual is meant for those single, travelling individually or travelling with spouse but with no kids
- Family is when you are travelling with children.
It is not advisable to purchase Family plan unless with kids because the premium is often 2.5 times of an
individual's premium
B. Plan Type : ANNUAL or SINGLE TRIP
- Annual is meant for frequent travellers. If you have travelled for more than 5 times a year, it is more economical to
purchase an Annual policy. Also, it saves you the hassle of having to apply for travel insurance each time you travel
- Single Trip is taken up only when you need to travel. This is suitable for those who travel infrequently
Example : if you travel 5 times to Hong Kong / China for business in a year, with each trip averaging a week, your
single trip premium would have been $40. and for 5 trips, that would be $200. Purchase an Asia-Pacific's Annual
Plan for S$170, you save S$30.00! On top of that, any other trips within the region of Asia Pacific, you will enjoy free
coverage.

C. Plan Choice : SUPERIOR or STANDARD
- Superior offers higher sum insured and limits and this probably more suitable if you are seeking higher sum of
protection or if you are travelling for a longer period or if you are travelling outside Asia where all costs are
significantly higher
- Standard usually offers reasonable protection limits for easy travel within Asia or for a shorter period of travel
To determine whether you should by purchasing Superior or Standard plans, you should always ask yourself these
questions:
1. What are the costs of living in that country? Should an accident happen, how much will it cost to be treated in
hospital?
2. How far is the country from Singapore? In the event of an emergency evacuation which requires special chartered
plan to return to your country, what are the estimated costs?
3. What is the legal climate in the country you are visiting? If you go to countries which are litigious, you may cause
third party's damage or injuries which may set you back with high compensation

Important Information
Medical Expenses (overseas) - if you need to be admitted to a hospital, there are hospitals overseas which require a Letter of Guarantee before admission is allowed. Hence it is important that you contact the insurers emergency hotline for assistance
Medical Expenses (Singapore) - please note that there is a period for which you can seek treatment upon return to Singapore, usually 7 days or so. And some insurers may impose that treatment locally follows only after a treatment overseas
Trip Cancellation or Curtailment - Trip cancelled or curtailed as a result of an airlines change in schedule or cancellation of flight is not covered under travel insurance policies
Claims Documents - All claims must be made using the insurers claim form plus the submission of the following documents
Things to Watch Out For
Premium : the difference in premium between insurers is marginal unless for longer trips. You should avoid saving a few dollars in travel insurance after already spending hundreds or thousands on your trip. Some plans cost more but importantly, is the speed, convenience, flexibility, empathy and reasonability of the insurer in responding and settling claims. Some companies take a long to reply to claims and some insurers may ask for too many supporting documents, all these adding to the cumbersome process of claiming
Sufficient Coverage : are you buying the right plan for your trip? Is the coverage sufficient? Medical costs are immensely high in countries such as United States and Europe. It is probable that an accident which gives rise to a 30 days stay in hospital can incur bills up to S$200,000
Claims Response Time : You may find some insurance companies are speedier in making claim payments. You may find that some insurance companies will reject your claims while others dont. Thus it is often not price which rules the day. Placing your risk with a reasonable insurer will give you better protection and peace of mind.
